THE STONE

Coffee Lace Agate banded chalcedony / silicon dioxide / microcrystalline quartz

Coffee lace agate is a variety of banded chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz — distinguished by its warm, earthy color palette of deep browns, tans, creams, and grays that layer in smooth, flowing bands through the stone. Like all agates, it forms when silica-rich groundwater seeps into cavities in volcanic or sedimentary rock and deposits layer after layer of chalcedony over millions of years. Each band represents a distinct period of mineral deposition, which is why the patterns are so consistent yet so varied from stone to stone. The name "coffee lace" is a trade name that describes the stone's color range — no two specimens look exactly the same, though all share that signature warm, banded quality. Agate as a stone type has one of the longest histories of human use of any mineral — it appears in Neolithic tools, ancient Egyptian amulets, Greek and Roman carved gemstones, and decorative objects across nearly every ancient culture. It was prized not only for its beauty but for its hardness and the way it could be shaped and polished to a high finish.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Coffee lace agate is a durable stone and handles daily wear well. Remove before swimming, soaking, or showering — prolonged water exposure can weaken the stretch cord over time. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals, perfumes, and lotions. The faceted nugget cut exposes more surface area than a round bead, so store away from harder stones or jewelry that could scratch the faces. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth. Store flat or in a pouch between wears.
