Rainbow Fluorite

Deep purple. Teal green. Misty gray. Almost black. All in one bracelet, all in one stone.

Rainbow fluorite doesn't pick a color — it carries all of them at once, shifting as the light moves across it. Each bead is its own little landscape. Some are mostly purple with a streak of green cutting through. Some are nearly clear with a shadow of color underneath. Some look like they've got weather inside them.

It's one of those stones that photographs well and looks even better in person, which is a rare thing to be able to say. Named Northern Lights for exactly what it looks like — something that shouldn't be possible and yet there it is.

Part of Unearthed — a collection of natural gemstone bracelets, each stone chosen for what it looks like straight out of the earth.

THE STONE

Rainbow Fluorite calcium fluoride / isometric crystal system / multi-zone coloring

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral that forms in hydrothermal veins, often alongside quartz, calcite, and various metal ores. What makes rainbow fluorite distinct is its color zoning — as the crystal grows, different trace elements get incorporated into different layers, producing bands of purple, green, blue, clear, and sometimes yellow or pink within a single stone. The result is a mineral that looks almost artificially colored but is entirely natural. Fluorite has been mined and prized for thousands of years — ancient Romans carved drinking vessels from it, believing it prevented intoxication, and it has appeared in decorative and ceremonial objects across China, Europe, and the Americas. Today it's one of the more widely collected minerals in the world, and rainbow fluorite specifically remains a favorite for its dramatic color variation. Fluorite also has an interesting physical property: many specimens fluoresce under ultraviolet light, which is actually where the word "fluorescence" comes from — named after fluorite itself.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Fluorite is a softer stone — it sits at a 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it can scratch more easily than quartz-based stones. Handle with care and store separately from harder stones or jewelry that could damage the surface. Keep away from water — fluorite is water-soluble over time and prolonged exposure can dull the finish. Remove before swimming, showering, or soaking. Avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, and lotions. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth only. With careful handling, this bracelet will stay beautiful.
